William Vandever, Religious Dutchness (and the West and Midwest)

8 Nov

For those who may be interested, I have added a link to my Miscellaneous page. The link is to a pdf of my latest publication, a paper on William Vandever, a Civil War and Gilded Age era Republican Congressman (Iowa and California), general (Iowa), U.S. Indian Inspector (West), and Presbyterian. (You will need to scroll down the page to get to “William Vandever.”) This new publication is part of a set of conference papers of AADAS, the Association for the Advancement of Dutch-American Studies. The volume’s topic is reflected in its title: Dutch Americans and War. Vandever, I argue, was a rather reluctant warrior. He was also far removed generationally from his 17th-century forbears who emigrated from the Netherlands. Nonetheless, his Presbyterian religious sensibilities were central to his continuing self-identity as Dutch American.
