How a Californian father adapted to Utah

Jared Farmer, who teaches history at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, writes about place. His book On Zion’s Mount: Mormons, Indians, and the American Landscape is about how a western place–Mt. Timpanogos, overlooking the university town of Provo, Utah–was remade in the Mormon imagination. I highly recommend the book. (It is not just me; the book won the Francis Parkman Prize.)

Farmer has a new book on California. I look forward to reading it at some future time.

Meanwhile, Farmer has written for High Country News a fine piece on his father, a Californian, who found himself in Utah for most of his adult life. You can read his essay here: How my Californian father adapted to Utah — High Country News.
